This illustration, from the Hildebrandt brothers' 1977 LOTR calendar, makes a superb jigsaw challenge--the artwork is exquisitely detailed and the colors are utterly magical. Just hard enough to be interesting but won't drive you nuts. An excellent choice for jigsaw fans and Tolkien fans alike.

I bought this for my wife who is a puzzle addict. She found it to be tougher than most but not too much so. Beautifully artwork and crisp edges on the pieces. A very high quality puzzle.

The pieces do not interlock well. You cannot pick up and move a block of pieces at one time. The shapes of the pieces are also unoriginal. In the future, the only puzzles I will buy are Springboks.

The Smaug puzzle is tough (many oddly shaped pieces plus conventional 4 outies, 3 outies/1 inny, 2 outies/2 innies, 1 outy/3 innies, and 4 innies), hangs together extremely well, and very realistic - one can almost feel the flame. In short - great!

We are not intimidated by 1,000 piece puzzles, and we don't shrink away from tight color schemes. We (meaning my kids) have completed a number of puzzles this year, and completed this one, also.
The problem with this puzzle is that the piece shapes are boring. The basic shape is a four-sided piece, with only tiny variations in the tabs and holes, set in straight lines across the puzzle. This means that two similar-colored pieces with nearly identical shapes can fit into a spot, but of course only ONE piece is correct. The kids had to remove pieces often after realizing a mistake. Their ages range all the way down to 6; it is frustrating for a 6-year-old to have his pieces taken out. One other note: the pieces do not "interlock," so once a child completes a section, like a pillar or the tower of flame, it can't be moved as a section -- you have to take it apart piece by piece or try to transfer it on a piece paper. That's not fun.
On the plus side, the picture on the box is HUGE, so more than one kid can look at it at the same time, from across the table. Also on the plus side, the completed puzzle is gorgeous and a joy to look at.
We do puzzles after school to relax, or as a time-out activity when life gets too busy. This was not a relaxing or fun puzzle for us, although the morning they came trooping upstairs to tell me it was finished, they were very impressed with themselves.
